Cross Country Ski Packages: Buyer's Guide

Cross Country Ski Packages
Cross country ski packages can be divided into 4 main categories:
- Touring Ski Packages
- Backcountry Ski Packages
- Skate Ski Packages
- Classic Ski Packages
We have selected ski packages for each ski category. A pre-set ski package eliminates guesswork of what ski to buy with what, boot, binding and pole. There is also a cost savings for you by purchasing a whole ski package. Skate ski and classic ski packages have also been designed for different levels of skier - from experts to beginners. Purchase the skis, boots, bindings and poles together for a complete ski package!
Touring ski packages are designed for the recreational skier that wants to use the ski for both groomed conditions on trails as well as cruising out the back yard. Touring skis use the classic ski technique. These skis provide a waxless ski base and are designed for ease of maneuverability and stability. The skis are wide and stable, and boots are designed for comfort. Touring skis are sized based upon the person's weight (not height). A select number of skis packages have been designed especially for women.
Several ski packages are available, depending upon the quality of ski, boot, and pole one desires. More expensive packages are made up of lighter skis, boots that provide more stability, and higher quality poles.
Touring Ski Packages include:
Backcountry skis are made for the recreational skier that wants to use the ski for both on groomed trail as well as getting into the wilderness. Providing a metal edge and a waxless base, these skis are wider and provide more stability than a touring ski. Boots and bindings are also more substantial. Some skis fit in groomed tracks, while others do not. A backcountry ski package will get you on the skis and out to trails without the guesswork on what to buy.

Backcountry Ski Packages include:
*Ski will not fit into a groomed ski track (track is about 70cm wide).
Substitutions can be made for a 75mm boot and binding.
Skate skiing has become very popular for both beginning skiers as well as well as seasoned veterans. Skate skiing provides an fast pace intensive workout, and is a lot of fun. There is no worrying about your kick wax, and most can learn the skating technique quickly. Skate skis are thin, light, and are shorter than the classic ski. The boot and binding are fairly stiff. Poles are lightweight and are quite a bit longer than the other 3 categories of skis.
When selecting a skate ski package consider the caliber of ski package you want to purchase. Many who are entering the sport choose an entry level ski package and move up in quality over time. Some jump in and purchase a high end package right at the beginning. There is no disadvantage of purchasing high end equipment. The performance/race ski tends to be easier to maneuver and lighter, making a more pleasurable ski experience. The higher end boots are designed for performance and are stiff and give optimum control. Top end poles are lighter overall.
Skate Ski Packages include:
*Substitutions of boots, bindings and poles may be possible. Call our shop for substitutions.
Classic skiing is great when the snow has just fallen and you still want to be in groomed tracks. Classic skis are longer than skate skis and are light weight. The boot and binding is flexible allowing for forward and back movement. Classic skis use a kick wax that is applied below the foot in the "kick zone" of the skis. Classic skis now also come in the waxless version. Waxless skis are a bit slower than the waxable type, but are useful in tough waxing conditions.
